From 4 in 100 to 80%

Today's subject is going to be a little more somber.

Obviously, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is what it sounds like: a hospital that treats and finds cures for children with "catastrophic diseases" and critical health problems. Since it was first established, the hospital focused mainly on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL. When the hospital first started out, the cure rate was about 4 in 100 children. Thanks to the hospital's efforts, according to St. Jude, the current cure rate for ALL is 80 percent.

How amazing is that? Really. Thanks to this hospital, HUGE strides have been made in cancer research, and issue that is really, really dear to my heart.

Here's a list of medical conditions that are treated and/or cured at St. Jude.

Once again, if you want to donate, see earlier entries.

10 in 10

39 days left!

Okay so today's focus is 10 in 10. Delta Delta Delta has always dedicated their time and money to St. Jude Hospital, but starting in July 2006, the fraternity pledged to raise $10 million in 10 years and donate it to the Hospital. That's a lot of money, folks!

Good news is, we're way ahead of schedule! At the 2008 biennial celebration, Tri Delta had raised $5.6 million!

Where will the money go within the organization? The $10 million goes toward the new Chili's Care Center at the Research Hospital. The link posted above gives all the information, but in case you don't feel like stumbling around the web, I'll just give you the low-down here. The Chili's Care Center has 18 inpatient rooms to accommodate more patients, due to growing numbers at the hospital. The new floor will include:
  • Rooms with approximately 30% more space
  • An attached parent room complete with windows, a full bathroom, and standing shower
  • The hospital's main pharmacy
  • Two nurse stations
  • Family lounge
  • Education office
  • Teen room and child life play area

All of this reminds me!

Chili's also supports St. Jude! They have "Create-a-Pepper" fundraisers where you or your kids and decorate a chili that they will hang on the wall. You're encouraged to make a donation, of course, but you can also just write inspirational messages on them. So visit your local Chili's for some awesome food and good philanthropy!

We have a date!

45 DAYS LEFT!

So I have some details for you all! As of now, the Delta Kappa chapter of Delta Delta Delta will have their Up Til' Dawn event on April 2, 2009. Get ready to fight the yawn!

JUST so you know, here's a little more about Up Til' Dawn. It's a student-led and run philanthropic organization hosted by universities nationwide. After days of fundraising, members of the surrounding community get together and raise awareness for St. Jude. Together, they stay up late at night to honor children who have given up countless nights fighting cancer.

Someone mentioned this, and I thought it was a great idea. If you're interested in donating to St. Jude Children's Hospital directly, here's a link to the official Web site. There are lots of different ways to give: one single time, monthly, over the phone, through mail, or email. You can pick the payment that best fits you.

If you want to get something out of donating, other than the awesome feeling you'll feel deep down, they also have merchandise you can purchase. Our chapter bought St. Jude Christmas cards last semester to give out to organizations on campus. This not only benefits St. Jude financially, but it spreads the word to the recipient of the card. I would know, because I've received cards from other organizations, like Unicef. I always take a double take at the card, and it means a lot more than just a Hallmark card.

Okay, one last thing: Here's a link to the St. Jude facebook group for those of you facebook junkies!

I'll definitely keep you all updated on the Up Til' Dawn event, but I don't want to give you info that's subject to change, just so you don't get confused. Keep checking in for more information, though!!
