New focus!

I'm not gonna lie, I've been SUPER busy this last week, so I haven't really had time to think of a new focus for my blog. I'm kind of looking forward to Matt's suggestion of a weekly focus--I think that would help! :D I have some ideas, I just don't want to bore you with facts.

So, here are some random little facts to keep you entertained until I come up with something good:

  • I still don't have pictures yet from the event, but I'll post them as soon as I get them. Dan, my coworker, actually tivo-ed the KSPR news report of the event and gave it to me, but I don't know how to put it on a blog. It was pretty cool, they reported the weather in front of our pie-in-the-face booth. Apparently, after he was reporting (but still on air), someone threw a pie that didn't even make it close to the victim's face. The news reporter shook his head and walked off camera!
  • I googled St. Jude infographics to see if they had anything cool....they didn't. I found some info about Enron & owners of Big Oil. Not sure what that had to do with the Research Hospital.
  • In our Graphic Design class, one of my sisters made a billboard for St. Jude (we had to design a billboard for an organization). I don't have her file, sadly, but it turned out to be pretty cool. Maybe I'll have her email it to me.
That's all I've got this week. Sorry it wasn't too involved, folks. Next week will be better!

We fought the yawn!

-4 days since UTD

Up Til' Dawn was a total success! Between our letter writing campaign and Up Til Dawn event, our chapter raised over $12,000 for St. Jude!! That's a huge amount for such a small chapter, & we're super proud.

This was our first year putting on Up Til Dawn, and now we have everything thought out. For example, next year, girls working the pie-in-the-face booth will be wearing t-shirts and old jeans...not $100 dresses...we didn't anticipate having pie fly out of the pan and onto our bods. Also, we'll bring more towels for the volunteers to clean up with. We'll definitely need more whipped cream next year if Petrich volunteers again--his classes are REALLY hard, and he also gave extra credit to students who threw a pie in his face. He raised probably half of the $82 just from the pie booth!

Thank you to all of you who stopped by and/or donated. We're so honored to present St. Jude with all that money!!

Bad news, good news.

4 days left!

New updates!

First of all, I have some bad news. Jim Arnott will not be attending the event, BUT other members of the sheriff department are going to be there.

But now for the good news: so far, our chapter has raised approximately $1,710 in donations for Up Til Dawn! That is amazing! Some of those donations will be for the pancake breakfast and decorations, but most of it will be prizes for people who come & participate! So, now there's even more incentive for you to come!

Only 4 more days guys!

Oh so soon!

9 days left!

So, as you can see, the event is coming up SOON. I hope you guys are actually planning on coming...it really will be a good time. Trust me, I wouldn't lie to you. I'll remind y'all in class next week, but you can always check up on the event here.

Also, this has yet to be confirmed, but I Jim Arnott MAY be coming to participate in the pie-in-the-face, so that should be a good fundraiser:) I will say no more about that, but if nothing else, that should be some incentive to come! They're still working on the details, but he sounded interested.

I hope everyone's having a good spring break and save a little money so you can donate some to a good cause!

Coming Soon...

16 days left!

The event's coming up soon!! April 2 is only 2 weeks & 2 days away!

We're gathering the items up for the event since we're getting closer and closer to the event. Tri Delta Meagan Harmon's parents will be providing the pancake supplies, so a big thanks to them!

Tickets will be sold at the door the night of the event, but t-shirts and tickets will be on sale that whole week. Here's how the breakdown of sales goes:
$3 to get in
$2 for pancake breakfast
= $5 together
$7 for entry fee, pancake breakfast, & t-shirt.

The festivities will begin at 8:00 p.m and will last until midnight. All booths are friendly for any age, and the casino area should keep the adults entertained. Please come support our cause, it should be a lot of fun and St. Jude could really use the money!

If you'd like to donate to the event, contact Karli Courtney at 816.674.7072.

Ante Up!

28 days left!

Today's post is going to be a short one...I'm scared I'm going to run out of info. SO. I thought I'd fill you in on our Up Til' Dawn event.

Up until this point, most of my info has been national news. But this is where it gets local: Our chapter of Delta Delta Delta is going to host Up Til' Dawn at Drury! I told you a little about what the event was in an earlier entry, but it gets better.

This is the first year Drury will be hosting Up Til' Dawn, but it's going to be a pretty big event. I had my first meeting the other day about it, and I'm pumped!! It'll be held in the Weiser and Mabee gyms on campus. We're going to have a casino area, complete with roulette, poker, blackjack, and darts. Money won't be gambled, since that's against the law, obviously...but it'll still be fun.

In the other area, there are going to be various booths, including a pie-in-the-face where Drury faculty members will have...well, pies thrown in their faces. Should be pretty fun.

We'll also have our annual Pancake Breakfast, where you can have some late-night flapjacks. All the money made at the door will go to St. Jude. There will also be donations accepted inside the gyms, as well.

More info to come, but this is just a little heads up on the event. It'll all go down on April 2, later in the evening. Get excited!!

From 4 in 100 to 80%

Today's subject is going to be a little more somber.

Obviously, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is what it sounds like: a hospital that treats and finds cures for children with "catastrophic diseases" and critical health problems. Since it was first established, the hospital focused mainly on acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL. When the hospital first started out, the cure rate was about 4 in 100 children. Thanks to the hospital's efforts, according to St. Jude, the current cure rate for ALL is 80 percent.

How amazing is that? Really. Thanks to this hospital, HUGE strides have been made in cancer research, and issue that is really, really dear to my heart.

Here's a list of medical conditions that are treated and/or cured at St. Jude.

Once again, if you want to donate, see earlier entries.

10 in 10

39 days left!

Okay so today's focus is 10 in 10. Delta Delta Delta has always dedicated their time and money to St. Jude Hospital, but starting in July 2006, the fraternity pledged to raise $10 million in 10 years and donate it to the Hospital. That's a lot of money, folks!

Good news is, we're way ahead of schedule! At the 2008 biennial celebration, Tri Delta had raised $5.6 million!

Where will the money go within the organization? The $10 million goes toward the new Chili's Care Center at the Research Hospital. The link posted above gives all the information, but in case you don't feel like stumbling around the web, I'll just give you the low-down here. The Chili's Care Center has 18 inpatient rooms to accommodate more patients, due to growing numbers at the hospital. The new floor will include:
  • Rooms with approximately 30% more space
  • An attached parent room complete with windows, a full bathroom, and standing shower
  • The hospital's main pharmacy
  • Two nurse stations
  • Family lounge
  • Education office
  • Teen room and child life play area

All of this reminds me!

Chili's also supports St. Jude! They have "Create-a-Pepper" fundraisers where you or your kids and decorate a chili that they will hang on the wall. You're encouraged to make a donation, of course, but you can also just write inspirational messages on them. So visit your local Chili's for some awesome food and good philanthropy!

We have a date!

45 DAYS LEFT!

So I have some details for you all! As of now, the Delta Kappa chapter of Delta Delta Delta will have their Up Til' Dawn event on April 2, 2009. Get ready to fight the yawn!

JUST so you know, here's a little more about Up Til' Dawn. It's a student-led and run philanthropic organization hosted by universities nationwide. After days of fundraising, members of the surrounding community get together and raise awareness for St. Jude. Together, they stay up late at night to honor children who have given up countless nights fighting cancer.

Someone mentioned this, and I thought it was a great idea. If you're interested in donating to St. Jude Children's Hospital directly, here's a link to the official Web site. There are lots of different ways to give: one single time, monthly, over the phone, through mail, or email. You can pick the payment that best fits you.

If you want to get something out of donating, other than the awesome feeling you'll feel deep down, they also have merchandise you can purchase. Our chapter bought St. Jude Christmas cards last semester to give out to organizations on campus. This not only benefits St. Jude financially, but it spreads the word to the recipient of the card. I would know, because I've received cards from other organizations, like Unicef. I always take a double take at the card, and it means a lot more than just a Hallmark card.

Okay, one last thing: Here's a link to the St. Jude facebook group for those of you facebook junkies!

I'll definitely keep you all updated on the Up Til' Dawn event, but I don't want to give you info that's subject to change, just so you don't get confused. Keep checking in for more information, though!!

Welcome!

51 DAYS LEFT!

For the next few months, I'm going to update this blog with information about St. Jude Children's Hospital, as well as Up Til' Dawn, the Delta Delta Delta philanthropy event that raises money for St. Jude. Don't know what any of that means? Awesome. That's why I'm here! You'll know allllllllll about it by the time this blog is completed.

In the meantime, here's a good link to get you started. Check it out! It's an amazing organization I'm passionate about and am fortunate enough to help.
